Homer, by the way, reopens Friday for patio dining and takeout from that handy soft serve window. The restaurant pre-emptively closed on July 21 so everyone could get tested and lay low after an employee came in contact with someone who tested positive for Covid. Brilliant news for anyone who loves the soft serve window at Homer. Or clever pro-cocktails/pro-parenthood naming conventions. Some call his food Mediterranean, a descriptor about as broadly unhelpful as terming any dude in slim-fitting pants a hipster. Or the soft serve window behind the bar, which dispenses swirls of tangerine or vanilla-fig to passersby, and dessert sundaes decked with seed brittle and a Luxardo cherry compote inside the dining room .
From the looks of things at Beacon Hill’s new Homer, former Sitka and Spruce chef Logan Cox has an instant neighborhood hit on his hands. Barely two weeks in, Homer’s warm, rustic-chic space is already drawing crowds with its menu inspired by the flavors of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Homer dedicates a menu section to things one might spread on saucer-size pitas, which arrive at your table almost too hot to touch, soft interior still puffed up with hot air from the dome oven in the corner of the open kitchen. It’s not a big lineup, just five items, but Cox’s dreams of his own restaurant began here, with spreads and pita. End your meal with a swirl of soft-serve ice cream; or, in warmer months, pick some up at the walk-up window out front ($7 in the restaurant, $5 from the window).

The new fast casual spot will open sometime in summer 2020 in the same building as Perihelion Brewery. Chef Logan Cox and Sara Knowles tell ... Milk Drunk will double down on the soft serve situation with dips, sauces, toppings, and waffle cones, and also serve plenty of cocktails. Cox’s opening menu features dishes like hummus with homemade pita; charred carrots and turmeric; and lamb ribs with pistachio, plums, and cumin. The kitchen’s wood-fired grill is front-and-center, and most dishes have at least one element that’s hit the flames. To balance the char, Cox looks to fresh herbs and bright sauces. Its heat fires pita in a matter of seconds, so hungry tables are breaking bread almost immediately after a server takes their order, the better to manage the crowds.
